A cryptography and privacy protection camp: the PrivacyIN initiative

Key facts:
  • The PrivacyIN ZK camp was held during the month of July 2022.

  • Many of the attendees were developers from companies such as Google, Twitter and TikTok.

PrivacyIN (Privacy Institution), founded by the LatticeX Foundation, strives to build an open community for studying cryptography and privacy preservation technologies. That is why last July he organized the first ZK camp to impart theoretical and practical knowledge in these areas.

The institution works with leading academics and developers which focus on privacy preservation technology to promote innovation and implementation of ZK (Zero-Knowledge Proof), MPC (Multi-Party Computation) and FHE (Fully Homomorphic Cryptography) in the field of Web3.

To enable innovation in the area of privacy preservation, PrivacyIN plans to offer technical training, build a research community and incubate innovative projects, with a focus on Moderna cryptography technology.

Its goal is to make it easier for developers to apply theoretical protocols, improve the innovative engineering ability among cryptographic researchers, and maintain a community.

From theory to practice: PrivacyIN’s ZK camp benefits more than 100 students

The first PrivacyIN ZK camp started on July 9, and it has already come to an end. Over the past month, the camp offered intensive and practical courses, which have been well received by crypto enthusiasts.

In the first and second week, Yupeng Zhang, assistant professor in the Department of Engineering and Computer Science at the Texas A&M University, he offered vivid illustrations of the basic theories about ZKP cryptography and provided an overview of the current research progress.

Together with the students, Dr. Zhang explored the classic protocols of zkSNARK and he demonstrated the basic principles of protocol implementation in simple terms.

During the third week, Dr. Siyuan Han from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology focused on the practice sessions and introduced the participants to the application of the ZKP circuits. An overview of the development of the L2 circuit, zkEVM studies and the analysis of the classical ZK circuit were covered.

Dr. Han presented a lot of case studies, which led to heated discussions among the participants. Last week, Kevin, a cryptographic engineer, focused on the practical application of circuits.

He showed the participants how Snarkjs+Circom can be used to create a simple ZKP neural network prediction application and how it can be published on a blockchain. The specific process covers: parameter construction, circuit design, zkey generation, contract verification, transaction and validation, etc.

An initiative for the development of technologies that promote privacy

These practices significantly improved the participants’ understanding of circuit application and honed their skills. It should be noted that many of the attendees are developers from large companies such as Google, TikTok and Twitter, and students from top universities such as Stanford, Tokyo University and Tsinghua University.

Some participated in the online courses. They learned and practiced together with their offline peers and also presented excellent assignments. The intensive and practical courses offered by PrivacyIN triggered a worldwide boom in learning cryptography.
